HCC Part 5: Hepatocarcinogenesis: Early HCC

HCC - Proposed classification by International consensus group on HCC & WHO

EARLY HCC (VAGUELY NODULAR):

A  tumor composed of well differentiated HCC with an indistinct margin


Has following features:                       

        1. Well Differentiated                                

        2. Small size (< 2 cm)                                 

        3. Poorly marginated    (indistinct margin without tumor capsule)   

         4. Stromal invasion : Infiltration of the fibrous tissue around the portal triads or in the 

                                           surrounding tissue  (vs dysplastic nodules)                             

        4. No vascular invasion

        5. Hypovascular

        6. Almost always do not show intra-hepatic metastasis

        7. Portal tracts are retained
