Autoimmune Liver disease - general overview

Autoimmune Liver disease - General overview

Three major clinico-pathological entities:

1. Autoimmune Hepatitis (AIH) - Immune related chronic liver disease

2. Primary billiary cirrhosis (PBC)

3. Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC)

4. Overlap syndrome: AIH with overlapping features of PSC/PBC

Histopathology

- Plasma cell infiltrates (overlaps among the three entities)

- PBC classically has high IgM expression

- PSC and AIH have predominantly IgG expression

Biochemical:

AIH: Auto-antibodies - ANA / ASMA / anti- LKM-1 / anti-SLA

PBC: Positive AMA serology / Elevated AP

PSC: Elevated AP
