MRI PROSTATE - TECHNIQUE- CLEAR THE AIR!

EXCESSIVE AIR IN THE RECTUM CAN INTERFERE WITH DIFFUSION WEIGHTED IMAGES

Figure: It shows a PIRADS 4 lesion in the left peripheral zone. The b-800 images show show distortion and poor visibility. This is despite the fact, that the rectal air is slightly above the level of prostate.

Addressing the issue:

1. It is advisable to ask the patient to evacuate the rectum and empty the bladder prior to MRI prostate

2. If there is excessive air, stop the scanning. Let the patient empty rectum and restart the scan.

Alternative strategy:

Complete the scan and send the patent to evacuate the rectum. Between two other studies, you can take the patient again and finish the diffusion weighted imaging.
