Port site infection due to MOTT- Pathophysiology & Imaging features

(mycobacterium other than tuberculosis / Atypical mycobacterium) 



Rare complication of laparoscopic surgery

Nosocomial infection due to incompletely sterilised laparoscopic instruments

Most common organism is "Mycobacterium Fortuitum", an "atypical mycobacterium" found in soil and tap water and has incubation period of 3 - 4 weeks. 

Diagnosis: Smear is positive in 50 % only and culture takes 6 to 8 weeks. PCR test is preferred. 

Imaging: Show sinus tracts with thick collection. Usually, there is no communication with viscera. 

Management is usually "medical". Large collections may need drainage procedure
