Applying Likert scale in your everyday Radiology practice

Measure your attitude!

Introduced by "Rensis Likert"  in 1932 by published a paper "A Technique for the measurement of Attitudes"

It is a psychometric response scale

It indicated respondents positive-to-negative strength of agreement

It is more like a survey commonly applied for the level of agreement

Likert 1: Strongly disagree

Likert 2: Disagree

Likert 3: Neutral

Liker 4: Agree

Likert 5: Strongly agree

Likert scale can be applied to various different issues. For eg. Quality, frequency of something or likelihood etc

Possible examples in radiology:

1. Checking the Quality score of your scans:

Likert 1: Excellent

Likert 2: Good

Likert 3: Fair

Liker 4: Poor

Likert 5: Very poor

2. Assessment of a lesion:

For example if you are debating on a diagnosis ...you can check yourself what is the level of your confidence.

Eg. Liver lesion. If the lesion has all the features of hemangioma and your level of confidence is Likert 5, you give one and a confident diagnosis. If it is not 5, you can further dissect.....check for differentials and may be discuss with your colleague.

3. Likert scale for predicting significant prostate cancer

Before PI-RADS became popular, likert scale was being used in UK for interpretation of prostate MRI for the likely-hood of a significant cancer.
