Optimizing CT Scan image quality in a lean adult

Optimizing CT Scan image quality in a lean adult

Fig. 1: NECT was done using auto kVp and auto reference mAS selection. The acquired image is grainy, but of sufficient quality for a plain scan.

Fig 2. CECT (hepatic venous phase) was done at fixed kVp and manual selection of higher reference mAs.

Problems in CT image quality while scanning lean / emaciated adult

With auto kVp and auto mAS, the lean patients that weigh 50 kg or low may have a grainy image quality due auto selection of low kVp and mAS.

This affects the scan quality and interpretation.

Strategy:

- Use higher reference mAS or switch of the auto mAS in patient who are above 45 years

- Fix the kVp to your choice. For venous phase, make it 100 kVp

- Reconstruct images at 2 mm or more thin section, instead of 1 mm

What about increase in Radiation dosage:

One should always weigh the risk vs benefit ratio. To reduce the risk of radiation, we should not compromise the quality and eventual benefit to the patient
