Why every radiology resident should undergo mammography training

Every radiology program should have compulsory mammography training, early In the first year of residency.

Breast Imaging is a focused sub specialty with an aim to save lives!

This attitude has inculcated a sense of higher responsibility in the radiologist. At the same time, the medico-legal issues has prompted the subspeciality to be very meticulous.

Everything is standardized, from performing a mammogram, to filming, to viewing films or on DICOM workstation, reporting and quality control.

There is a disciplined set pattern on, how to review a mammogram, how to report & even a specific lexicon to be used.

There are guidelines, when to recall a patient for specialized views, when to use a second (ultrasound) or third modality (MRI) and when to do an invasive biopsy.

Finally, the impression is based on scoring system, which is easy to understand and becomes a guide to the the physician or surgeons to act accordingly.

The result....... less variation in interpretation and quality control!!

It may not be possible for other sub specialties to completely emulate due to the complexity and presence of multiple organs, and varied anatomy. The " one size fits all" concept may not fit for all.

I believe, this methodology of teaching and learning will inculcate discipline in the radiology student, which will go long way in the their training and future practice !!!
