RENAL VOLUME IN ADPKD

ADPKD (ADULT POLYCYSTIC KIDNEY DISEASE)

It is a genetic disorder & renal cysts are hallmark of ADPKD

Clinical Manifestations:

- Reduced urine concentration

- Renal stones

- Hematuria

- Pain

- Arterial hypertension

- Progressive GFR loss

- ESRD (end stage renal disease)

The clinical Manifestations are related to growth of the cysts

Renal volume is the biomarker to identify the patients at risk for complications and progression to end stage renal disease.

It can be used to identify the patients that are "fast progressors"

How to give renal volume:

Protocol- NECT limited to kidneys or MRI T2W TSE in coronal sagittal and axial plane

Volume calculation:

1. Ellipsoid volume calculation: Using length, width and depth measurements determined by sagittal, coronal and transverse vies on CT/MRI. You can use following calculator:

2. 3D Volume: More accurate. You should speak to your PACS vendor or the manufacturer of your scanner to provide a software to do complete surface volume.
