How do necrotic pancreatic collection's get infected ?

Pathophysiology of infected pancreatic necrotic collection

Peri-pancreatic necrotic collection: Initial scan  vs 2 weeks follow up

Infected necrosis is a late complication of acute pancreatitis (usually occurs 2 weeks after the onset. It is considered a secondary infection.

Possible pathway:

1. Direct bacterial translocation from the gut due to decreased mucosal barrier function in the intestines,

2. Spread of microorganisms through the bloodstream into the necrotic collection from the gut or other sites
