MANAGEMENT AND DOCUMENTATION OF CONTRAST EXTRAVASATION

Extravasation if happened, contrast injection should be immediately stopped. Reassure the patient and communication to the senior radiologist should be made. Patient needs to be assessed by radiologist and details of what has happened and actions to be taken explained to the patient. Reassurance should be given, that majority of extravasation's resolve with time and appropriate care is being taken. Documentation of the amount extravasated contrast  may be performed by CT scan or an X-Ray. There are no fixed guidelines to treat extravasation and may vary based on local policy. Local aspiration from the cannula, elevation of limb and cold pack application may be helpful. Referring physician to be updated about the event. Follow up with the patient is important.
